Wreaths have been around for a long time, but the Scandinavians seem to be the first to explicitly associate wreaths with winter. For regions with long nights and extreme cold during the winter months, wreaths actually bring hope into the home.
Early wreaths were made up of decorations such as wheels and bright lights. The Scandinavians believed that the sun was like a "wheel" that rolled back and forth from week to week.
Later, some of the Nordic people became Christian, and they still continued to decorate their homes with wreaths in the winter, and these wreaths grew to become a symbol of the Christians.
For them, these wreaths are made of evergreen plants which do not wither in the winter and symbolize the eternity of God and the soul of man.
