A gerbil needs to eat nearly 5 pounds of grass roots during the dry season, and gerbils typically have to carry back more than 20 pounds of grass roots before they feel safe enough to do so. Most of the roots end up rotting away, and then the gerbils have to clean the rotting roots out of their holes.

Why is this, and why are gerbils so anxious about food? It turns out that the gerbil's ancestors had experienced some dry seasons where it was difficult to find food, and since then this worry about future food has been deeply imprinted in the gerbil's genes.

When there are enough roots in their holes to get them through the dry season, the gerbils still have to work desperately, searching for food moment by moment.
