Halloween was originally a holiday that celebrated fall, but legend has it that on this night, ghosts visit the world. In order to scare the ghosts away and light their way back, people would light bonfires and serve food to the ghosts so that their families would not be harmed.
Later, this day was used as a festival for children and adults to have fun. Children often dress up in monster costumes, carry jack-o'-lanterns, and shout "trick or treat" as they go from house to house asking for candy, and the fun goes on until late at night.
Jack-o'-lanterns are one of the symbols of Halloween, and the orange color of pumpkins is also the iconic color of Halloween. On this day, people will use different sizes of pumpkins as home decorations, and also carve pumpkins to make jack-o-lanterns.
Pumpkin lamps originated in ancient Ireland, where turnips were first used to make "jack-o'-lanterns". When immigrants came to the United States, they found that pumpkins were more common and more useful than turnips, so they changed to using pumpkins and lighting candles inside.
