Magpies live mostly in human populated areas and like to build their nests in large trees next to houses. They prey on small animals such as insects and frogs, and also steal eggs and chicks of other birds, as well as melons, fruits, grains and plant seeds.
The closest relative to the magpie is the crow. So like many crows, magpies live in flocks, and they have a strong sense of territory, and whatever bird invades their territory will cause a bloody battle.
Don't underestimate the intelligence of magpies as they are probably the most "intelligent" of all birds. They are the only non-mammal to have passed the mirror test. It takes at least a year and a half for a human child to realize that the figure in the mirror is him or her!
The distribution of magpies basically covers the entire Eurasian continent from the temperate to the frigid regions except for Siberia, and partially in the Northwest African coast. However, magpies are not found in the Americas or Australia.
For today's drawing tutorial, our subject is a magpie. It is resting on a bare branch, looking around vigilantly, as if it is wary of its predators and looking for food at the same time.
