Mushroom clouds are created as a result of an explosion and are similar in shape to a mushroom, large at the top and small at the bottom, hence the name. Inside the mushroom cloud there may be smoke, flames and debris.
Modern mushroom clouds generally refer specifically to clouds formed after the explosion of a nuclear weapon such as an atomic or hydrogen bomb. Natural mushroom clouds can also be created by volcanic eruptions or by celestial bodies striking the Earth.
In fact, there is no direct connection between the formation of mushroom clouds and nuclear bombs. Theoretically, any bomb that is powerful enough to instantly heat a large amount of gas to very high temperatures in the atmosphere can form a mushroom cloud.
