In 1564, graphite, a black mineral, was discovered in a place called Barrowdale in England. Soon, some local shepherds realized that graphite could be used to draw marks on sheep.
Inspired by this, the people of the time cut graphite blocks into small strips for writing and drawing. However, the graphite strips easily soiled the user's hands and broke easily.
In 1761, a German chemist solved this problem: he first ground the graphite ore into powder, rinsed with water to remove impurities, to obtain pure graphite powder.
He then mixed graphite powder with sulfur, antimony, rosin and other substances. This mixture was then heated and pressed into the shape of a pen, which was the prototype of the pencil.
