Letter carriers already existed in England at the beginning of the 19th century. Because stamps had not yet been invented and post boxes had not been set up, postmen at that time collected letters on the streets.
They wore bowler hats and red tunics, and shook little golden bells in their hands. As soon as they heard the ringing bells, people came from all directions with their letters and postage to hand them over to the postmen.
Prior to 1863, most postmen did not deliver letters to recipients, but rather recipients picked them up at the post office themselves. On July 1, 1863, free home delivery of mail began.
In the beginning, postmen delivered letters on foot. As time progressed, postmen later had a variety of means of transportation to deliver the mail. The most commonly used was the bicycle.
