Quill pen, the predecessor of the current fountain pen, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century AD, the quill pen as a writing instrument to record the process of European civilization at every stage. Almost all written works were completed with the quill.
However, the origin of the first quill pen and the emergence of the period can not be traced. Opinions differ as to when and where it originated, but it is now generally believed to have been invented by the Romans in the sixth century AD.
The five largest feathers from the wings of a goose, turkey, swan, crow or waterbuck are generally used to make feather pens, and sometimes feathers from other birds can be used as feather pens too.
The most common type of quill used to make feather pens is goose feathers. Feather quills don't actually last very long, each quill only lasts about a week.
