Cupid is the god of love in ancient Roman mythology. But just as many Roman gods and goddesses trace their origins back to ancient Greece, Cupid is no exception, having been preceded by Eros in ancient Greek mythology.
Love is fickle and often causes pain, which the ancient Greeks and Romans blamed on the character problems of Eros. In their view Eros was a deity with a penchant for mischief.
Although, we usually think that Cupid's weapon is the bow and arrow, however in the beginning he uses props that are not bows and arrows. He used hammers, axes, whips, harps or other things.
Cupid is mostly portrayed as a young boy with a bow and arrow in his hands. His golden arrows into the heart would promote love towards marriage, and his lead arrows into the heart would make lovers hate each other and end in separation.
In today's drawing tutorial, we are going to learn how to draw a cupid. He is standing on a cloud with his bow and arrow in his hands and seems to have found the target that he wants to bring to love.
It's a bit of a funny looking cupid, does he fit the image you have of him in your mind? We will start by drawing his head, then his body, cloud, weapon and wings. Come along and try it out.
